Let’s play everyone’s favorite game show: who is this for? Verizon, you just released the LG Exalt LTE, an LTE-only flip phone with no 3G capabilities.

Who is this for?

Even as I type this, the prospect of a flip phone excites me, and I’m sure everyone who spends more time than they’d like buried in a smartphone can relate. Still, smartphones serve essential purposes that the LG Exalt LTE can’t fulfill, which further begs the question of its intended market.

The phone has a 3-inch LCD display with 400 x 240 resolution, a 1,470mAh battery, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and 8GB of memory. It also supports Wi-Fi calling and costs $168, which honestly seems a little pricey for such a limited device.

I’m all for a smart flip phone, but that isn’t what this is. I can still very much see the appeal of flip phones; there’s no exposed screen waiting to get scuffed up in your pocket. Making it a dumb phone, however, is taking a major step back.
