Netflix to Double Content Spending in Canada Michael Kwan October 25, 2011 Part of the reason I’ve been hesitant to sign up for Netflix in Canada thus far is that everyone tells me the content selection is severely limited when compared to our American counterparts. Even so, Netflix just posted its Q3 earnings report and it seems that they’re doing quite well north of the border. In fact, Netflix Canada now boasts over a million subscribers and it enjoyed a small profit in Q3. Contrast this to the loss of 800,000 subscribers in the United States, partly because of their recent pricing plan changes, as well as competition from Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and other alternatives. But they’re doing well in Canada. So, they’re looking to continue that growth by addressing the biggest issue with Netflix in Canada. The company has promised to double its quarterly content spending starting next year, bringing more TV shows and movies to Canucks. They say that this investment will provide Netflix Canada with “comparable content” to the United States. Maybe then I’ll sign up for the one month free trial and go from there.
