As a Canadian traveling through the United States (or elsewhere in the world), you can expect rather astronomical pay-per-use fees when talking, texting and especially when data-ing on the road. It adds up really quickly when you could be charged as much as $2 a minute, $0.75 per text, or $10 per day (up to just 10MB) for data. Koodo Roam could save you some serious cash.

Not unlike what you get with Fido Roam, Rogers Roam Like Home, Telus Easy Roam and Bell Roam Better, the idea with Koodo Roam (final name pending) is that you sign up for a compatible plan and pay a set daily fee to utilize your existing minutes, texts and data when outside of Canada.

In the case of Fido Roam, for example, you pay $5/per day for up to 10 days in a billing cycle to “use your data, talk and text from your Fido Pulse plan for one low daily price” in the United States. It costs $10/day when you’re traveling internationally to do the same. Seeing how everyone else is doing it, Koodo will soon have a new U.S. roaming option too. This makes sense since both Telus and Public Mobile have similar US roaming plans too.

This can be a very convenient option for people who want to keep their regular phone number while away from home and they don’t want to bother with a service like Roam Mobility. According to an official Koodo Mobile rep, they are “working on it” and Koodo Roam should be ready by late August or early September.

If you are current Koodo customer, your options are limited when you go on a day-trip to the States. You either use a third-party service like Roam Mobility, absorb the painful pay-per-use rates, or take on a monthly roaming plan starting at $30 (for talk, text and 150MB). Soon, you’ll have a better choice.
