Freedom Mobile Launches ZTE Grand X 4, $45/6GB LTE Plan for Life Michael Kwan December 1, 2016 News When WIND Mobile rebranded itself as Freedom Mobile last week, we learned a couple of things. First, the 4G LTE network is finally coming, but it will only be compatible with the LG V20 and the ZTE Grand X 4 for now. Second, Freedom Mobile has a promotional plan that’s valid for the first 12 months. Well, I’ve got good news on both those fronts. While the LG V20 was already available for purchase, the ZTE Grand X 4 has now just launched to provide you with a more affordable LTE-compatible handset. As you can probably surmise, it follows up on the Grand X, Grand X Plus, and Grand X 2 that came before it. To my knowledge, Canada never officially got the Grand X 3. Like the other Grand X phones, the ZTE Grand X 4 continues the tradition as an “affordable premium” device. That means it’s not going to blow you away with its specs. The 5.5-inch display is only 720p, the processor is only a Snapdragon 412, and there’s only 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. On the bright side, you do get a fingerprint sensor on the back, a sizable 3140 mAh battery, a 13MP main camera and a 5MP selfie camera. And yes, it fully supports Band 66 and Band 4, so you’ll rock out to Freedom’s LTE when the network goes live. The Grand X 4 is already listed on the Freedom Mobile website and you can pick it up for $299 outright or $0 on a $5/month MyTab Boost plan. The other big news has to do with the new LTE plans. As mentioned, there was a promo plan announced early last week that got you 6GB of data for $40, but that’s only for the first 12 months. After that, the plan drops to 3GB and goes up to $45. If you’re a loyal WIND customer, though, you may have received a message about a new $45 LTE plan that you can keep forever. The email is largely targeting customers in Toronto and Vancouver where the LTE network will go live first. The email outlines a plan that gives you 6GB of LTE data for life, along with unlimited calls to Canada and the US. The plan will cost you $40 for the first 12 months and then $45 after that, “half of what you would pay with any of our competitors for 6 GB of data.” To switch, simply log into your account and choose Smartphone 45 LTE from the Change Your Plan screen. The $5 credit gets applied starting on your next bill. If you’re anxious to get some LTE action but you’re interested in neither the flagship LG V20 or the “affordable premium” ZTE Grand X 4, Freedom Mobile is promising more LTE-compatible phones next year.
