ARCHOS Pumps Out Kid Friendly Android Tablet Powered by Ice Cream Sandwich Stephen Fung March 3, 2012 Press Release As the only team member at MEGATechNews with a kid at home (an 18 month old to be exact), this announcement was most welcome to me. I have an Eee Pad Transformer at home that seems to go missing often, and somehow ends up with food and tiny finger prints on the screen. ARCHOS, known for their many media player products in various sizes, has come out with a tablet built just for kids. They call it the “Child Pad” and it’ll hopefully be cool till they realize just how uncool that name is. The Child Pad is built around Android’s latest mobile OS known as Ice Cream Sandwich or 4.0 if you’re counting your calories. The device is powered by a 1GHz processor of unknown origin and 1GB of RAM underneath a 7 inch screen. The construction is mainly plastic and will hopefully come with some sort of anti-slip surface and some level of water resistance for pretty obvious reasons. And unlike regular Android Tablets, this one has a marketplace that is filtered with software called AppLib which filters things down to 14 kid friendly categories with over 10,000 apps. Since this device has a fully functional web browser, software onboard called Editions Profil beefs up parental controls and filters. The cost of the unit is only $129 US which makes me a bit worried about the quality and user experience. I once tried to give my then 16 month old a cheap Chinese tablet to play with which, at the time, was around the same price point, and even she knew the difference between my Eee Pad Transformer and it. If Archos wants to shoot us one, we’d be happy to ask the kid what she thinks. The full press release is after the break.
