Roku 4 Only Available in the US For Now Michael Kwan October 9, 2015 News Earlier this week, we were told about a whole slew of new features in Roku OS 7, like the ability to follow actors and directors, as well as get streaming online even when you need to login through a web browser. Along with the new OS, Roku also announced the new Roku 4. Curiously, this not-so-minor detail was left out of the Canadian press release we received. Inquiring further with our contacts, I learned that the new Roku 4 is only going to be available in the United States “for now,” but “Roku hopes to bring it to other markets (including Canada) in time.” No specific details were otherwise mentioned, so your guess is as good as mine as to when the Roku 4 will make it north of the 49th parallel… or into any other countries for that matter. Like the updated Roku 3 that I reviewed earlier this year, the Roku 4 will tap into the same thousands of streaming channels and it’ll come with the remote that has a built-in headphone jack, my favorite feature. Naturally, it also improves on its predecessors in a few ways, one of which taps into the “4” part of its name quite well. That’s because the Roku 4 is the first streaming device from the company, as far as I know, that supports both 4K Ultra HD (UHD) video and regular HD content. Of course, you’ll need to have a compatible 4K TV to handle those extra pixels. You’ll also notice that there is now an optical audio jack on the back, providing better support for your existing home theater speaker systems. There’s also a new Remote Finder feature on the Roku 4. Press a button and you’ll be able to locate your remote tucked between the couch cushions. The form factor is decidedly bigger — it looks to have a footprint almost four times as big as the Roku 3 — but it’s still as thin as ever. And the 802.11ac MIMO should deliver better wireless performance. You can expect the Roku 4 to ship to Americans toward the end of this month for $129.99. When and if it’ll ship to us poor 4K-free Canadians remains to be seen. Share This With The World!
