MEGATech Reviews – LUXA2 PL2 6000mAh Leather Power Bank Michael Kwan February 26, 2014 MEGATech Reviews What sort of materials do you usually have in mind when you think about mobile products? Aside from the internal circuitry and such, you can usually expect to find your smartphones and accessories decked out in a lot of plastic. Some of the nicer items may have aluminum, but with the noted exception of protective cases and pouches, leather rarely ever enters the conversation. That could be changing. When we were at CES in Las Vegas last month, we saw a new line of battery packs from LUXA2 including the leather-clad LUXA2 PL2. Here is a compact power bank product that is wrapped in genuine leather, all while retaining all of the key features you want in a portable battery pack. The Luxury of Leather Naturally, the single biggest differentiating feature with the PL2 is the the leather. That’s why it has a “L” in its name. Whereas the LUXA2 P2 power bank was slim and had an aluminum body, the PL2 opts for a real leather body and more of a gun cartridge-type shape. It’s not nearly as skinny, at 23mm of thickness, but it’s not as wide either at 47mm. It’s also shorter at 99mm too. Just in terms of aesthetics and first impressions, the LUXA2 PL2 certain feels nice in the hands. It does have some weight to it (159g), but the leather really makes this feel more like a luxury item than a typical tech product. This is what is called “PU leather,” meaning that it is covered with a layer of polyurethane that Wikipedia says provides “an artificially consistent texture that is easier to clean and maintain.” Underneath that PU leather body, you’ll find 6000mAh of mobile juice by way of a high capacity Samsung lithium polymer battery. That should be enough to charge most smartphones at least twice, if not three times. It’s also very much worth noting that the single USB output port is 2.1A, so it’s just as capable charging tablets as it is smartphones, portable GPS devices, Bluetooth headsets or whatever else you have that charges via USB. There is a carrying pouch included in the package, but you probably won’t need it. The included micro-USB to USB cable is definitely useful though. You Light Up My World There are two sets of lights that add to the functionality of this power pack. First, you get a series of three blue LED indicator lights on the front face. When you’ve got three lights, that means that the internal battery is at least 81% full. This goes down to 51-80% and 21-50% respectively for two lights and one light. If the single LED starts flashing, it means you are below 20%. To bring up the current level, you simply press the single power button on the side once. This blue color scheme is in line with what we saw on the P-MEGA portable power station, but of course that was an entirely different kind of product. They’re both portable, but you’ll have a far easier time stashing the PL2 in your pocket than the P-MEGA. As an added bonus, the PL2 also has a flashlight feature. When you double-tap on the power button, the single bright white LED turns on. This is located on the same top portion as where you’ll find the USB and microUSB ports. It’s not the brightest flashlight in the world, but it’s comparable to the flashlight function you may have with the LED flash on your smartphone. MEGATechie Opulent Pleasure or MEGATechie Flogging a Dead Horse? Portable battery packs have become something of a commodity these days, since they all serve fundamentally the same purpose. While that is mostly true, products like the PL2 demonstrate that gadgets don’t have to be totally geeky. They can be both fashionable and functional, juicing up your classy smartphone while clad in some slick PU leather. Even without the leather, this is a pretty nice power bank. The LUXA2 PL2 6000mAh battery power pack is listed for $66.00 and is available online. Share This With The World!
