Google’s Project Tango Smartphones Put the Power of a Mars Rover in Your Hand Dylan Duarte February 26, 2014 Google’s always working on something nifty and new and Project Tango is the latest in a series of innovative ideas from the Silicon Valley-based company. The Tango smartphone gives app developers (and anyone, but it’s geared towards app developers) a lot of data that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to like object-tracking and real-time 3D mapping. It’s essentially a smartphone that’s outfitted with numerous cameras and vision sensors and it’s been in the works for seven years. The technology used is similar to that used in NASA’s Exploration Rover that was shot up to Mars a decade ago, only now it’s been compacted to fit into a smartphone. Google is giving out 200 prototypes to various developers in the next few weeks and as far as I’m concerned, this is the really exciting part, because someone is bound to find a way to use the device that Google didn’t intend and that sort of crowd-sourced innovation is where the magic happens.
