MEGATech Showcase: Ice, Ice, Baby! Beth Snyder March 12, 2015 Features First, let me apologize if you now have that song stuck in your head. It was all I could think of, and as soon as I sat down to write about ice trays it was firmly entrenched in my own brain so I figured I’d share the wealth. At any rate, this showcase is all about ice trays (which can also be used for chocolate or sometimes tiny oddly-shaped cakes), because I have decided that if I start writing about summer-like things then maybe we’ll actually start heading toward spring rather than this seemingly endless winter with its negative ludicrous degrees, record-setting cold temperatures, and general miserableness. Because ice means drinks. Drinks mean parties. And parties typically happen more often in summer, especially those at which you serve drinks requiring ice. Let the need to chill beverages commence! Up first is a pair of skull ice molds for the creepier-minded among us. Each mold makes one three-dimensional skull ice cube measuring about 1.75″ x 1.75″ x 2.33″. But you’re not confined to ice! These molds can be used to make candy, cupcakes, or even soap. They’re dishwasher, oven, freezer, and microwave safe, and are made out of food-grade silicone. Pick up a pair for just $9.99 US. This one doesn’t specify as being anything other than dishwasher safe, but I assume it’s also freezer-safe. I bet you could also make candy in it, although I wouldn’t want to try it in the oven for a cupcake without being expressly told it’s safe. These are sold individually for $7.96 US each. If you’re going to do that, I would recommend doing chocolate or soap rather than ice… I have visions of it becoming a horribly soppy mess if you don’t. However you look at it, these are going to be too huge to put in a drink… but would be ideal for a punch bowl or for making a cake. Each controller measures about 2.9″ wide, so they would actually fit in a decent-sized glass. Of course, you could also use them to mold chocolates or cakes if you’d rather. This is the Dark Side vs. Light Side tray, and it lets you and your guests choose which side you’d rather be on. the Dark Side makes ice in the shape of Darth Vader and his evil pals, while the Light Side makes Han, Luke, Chewie, and C3PO. They won’t make your drinks as cold as Hoth (and thank goodness, really), but they will chill them quite nicely. Trays are available to pre-order for a May shipping date for $9.99 US. Now it’s the hashtag, and you can make ice cubes to float in your drinks with it. #partyon! Each one makes eight hashtags, and sells for about $10.00 US. This Laughing Buddha ice mold makes four little Buddhas out of water, juice, or chocolate (or probably cake batter as well, if you’d rather). This mold makes zombies, their parts, and a couple of accessories to go with them (2 full zombies, 1 zombie torso, 1 cat, 2 skulls, 1 wall section, 1 emerging casket, and 6 grave markers). The entire mold measures about 8.6? x 6.75? x 1?, while each full zombie stands just over an inch tall. Spookify your drinks for just $14.99 US. Source: Geek Alerts Whiskey drinkers know that adding ice to the glass tends to water down the flavour of the whiskey. For me, that’s not an issue as I don’t enjoy the taste, but I understand it’s a problem. Meet the Whiskey Wedge, which chills your libation but melts slower than traditional ice cubes to add less water to the glass. It comes with the tumbler and a silicone mold to ensure whiskey sipping perfection, at a cost of $17.95 US. If you’re even more of a purist, how about chilling your whiskey with some Whiskey Bullets?
