Mario Kart 8 Gives Nintendo's Profits a Much-Needed Boost

After the prolonged success of the Wii console, the last few years haven’t been kind to Nintendo, especially in regards to their latest console, the Wii U. Back in May we reported that Nintendo experienced their third straight annual operating loss. Shortly after that announcement, Nintendo released Mario Kart 8, which has been a smash hit both commercially and critically. Is it enough to save Nintendo? It’s certainly a start.

Thanks to Mario Kart 8’s strong sales, once foreign exchange gains are factored into Nintendo’s annual operating income, they’ll be able to report a net profit of at least 14.3 billion yen. Based onhow Nintendo fares this holiday season, they might have an overall profitable year. It isn’t all thanks to a plumber on a go-kart, though he certainly helped quite a bit.

Unfortunately, while the Wii U is finally picking up speed – doubling in yearly sales – the popular Nintendo 3DS is finally seeing dwindling sales. Heck, even the original Nintendo Wii is still selling, but those numbers are understandably dropping as well. Still, considering that the Wii U is Nintendo’s current flagship console, the argument could be made that things are looking up. The question is whether or not things will stay that way.
