Google has released what seems like a pretty major overhaul of their Google Calendar Android app. The biggest change seems to be the automation of your to-do list. The list is integrated with your gmail account, so if you get an email with dates and times of events – say an upcoming flight or concert – Google will automatically throw that into your to-do list.

You’ll still have to enter plenty of events manually and the new “assists” feature hopes to streamline that process by adapting to your schedule and recommending names of people and places that you interact with frequently. Thenthere’s the new schedule view, which as far as I can tell is just an aesthetic improvement. It adds in pictures of the places you’re going to as well as general pictures of food and drinks in an effort to spice up your schedule and make it look more lively.

I’m an organization junkie. I’ve been so intensely disorganized for years that I have to stay on top of thingsif I don’t want to forget everything I’m supposed to be doing. I’ve tried various calendar and to-do lists apps, but in the end I always end up sticking with a traditional pad and paper, and apps like the new Google Calendar are the reason why. I’m sure it would be useful for some people, but to me the new automated features sound like an easy way to clutter up your to-do lists with things you don’t actually want to do.
