Exterminate Nosy Colleagues With a Dalek Desk Defender Beth Snyder August 26, 2012 There are very few things that make me wish I still worked in an office. In fact, now that I think about it, this may well be the first one in almost two decades. But seriously…a desktop Dalek? And one that’s actually on your side? How can you not want one? OK, sure, it won’t actually exterminate that annoying office mate who insists on raiding your candy stash while you’re in yet another endless meeting, but it sure would be fun to see the look on his or her face when this thing comes to life as they’re snooping, wouldn’t it? The Dalek Desk Defender is USB-powered, with a “super long” cable (I guess in case you have one of those football field sized desks) included. It can detect a desk sneak from six to nine feet away, depending on how good the lighting is in your office. You can choose from three different settings: one is a motion detector with lights and sound, one with lights and no sound, and one leaves both options off for when you are actually siting at your desk. That last one prevents you from launching it across the room the 147th time it tells you to “o-bey”. When an unwanted visitor arrives near your desk, the Dalek will come to life, flashing lights and chanting one of two phrases (“Exterminate” and “Time, Jump, Imminent Repair”), as well as the sound effects of hover and gun. I’m assuming you know what those sounds are, since I’m sure you’re all proper Dr. Who fans…right? If only it could actually exterminate a few office pests! Although I suppose it’s best it can’t, as you’ll have to trigger it when returning to your desk yourself before you can get it turned off. What I don’t see is how big it is, but making some assumptions from the picture, such as a standard pencil being about seven inches long, I’d guess it’s about a foot tall, maybe a couple of inches shorter. And I can’t even tell you how badly I want one even though I don’t have a desk any more! I’m sure I could find somewhere creative to use it.
