On the list of gadgets that intrigue me beyond reason, this one is pretty high up. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing a smart TV, and now the one in my living room is making me crazy. Primarily because I can’t afford the astronomical amount of money per month it would take for me to get all the channels, bells and whistles that come with the service. But, if I could pick up one of these nifty little, really reasonably priced doodads and win, how cool would that be?

The Mini Android TV Box promises to turn your boring old regular TV into a smart TV, just as long as you already have a broadband WiFi network in place (and really, who doesn’t at this point?). It supports external USB storage, and features 4 GB of NAND memory, HDMI output and a 1080P video decoder for high resolution display on your flat screen television. I have to wonder if it would make my ancient tube TV freak out, or if I could still watch it with an obvious degradation of picture quality. But wait, there’s more! It also has a memory card reader, in case you have programming saved somewhere else.

The size of this thing is pretty incredible. It’s about the size of a deck of cards and weighs just 51g, which means you don’t really have to scramble to figure out where to fit it into your entertainment center. It handles pretty much every kind of video format you can throw at it (MKV, TS, TP, M2TS, RM/RMVB, BD-ISO, AVI, MPG, VOB, DAT, ASF, TRP, FLV), and comes with an IR remote.

Here’s the best part. It only costs $89.00 US. Seriously…what is there to lose by giving it a try? It’s officially on my short list of things to purchase, probably with my next check.
