Tracking Your Carbon Footprint with the Oroeco App Beth Snyder May 5, 2014 Being environmentally conscious is hard, isn’t it? So many things we take for granted have a huge impact on the world around us, from mowing the lawn on a hot summer day to driving ourselves to work instead of carpooling. But did you realize the things you buy also increase your carbon footprint? There’s manufacturing and shipping involved, and the effects on climate can be surprising. Oroeco has developed an app that can help you change your habits to be more friendly to the world, and it’s pretty neat. They’ve partnered with Mint.com (if you’re not familiar, Mint is a budgeting tool that’s very easy to use) to track the climate impact of where you’re going and what you’re doing. As Mint tracks how much you spent on what areas of your budget, Oroeco steps in to interpret that data and present you with a monthly report. What’s interesting is Oroeco doesn’t just track your behaviours; it also compares them to others in your area and your Facebook friends, providing information on how you can reduce your impact. There are in-app rewards you can earn by changing your habits for the better, and also real-life rewards if you do really well, like a Nest thermostat. If you’re having a bad month, the app allows you to purchase carbon offsets if you’d like. Oroeco is currently in beta testing, but the mobile app is expected to launch “soon(ish).” It appears to be free (as is registering for an account with Mint.com, which will be required to use the app), but we won’t know for sure until the actual launch. Once you download the app, invite your friends to use it as well, because as the folks at Oroeco say, “Whether or not Oroeco puts a dent in climate change really depends on you. Were only as powerful as the number of you using us, the amount you decide to take meaningful action, and the friends you encourage to do the same.” Source: TreeHugger Share This With The World!
