Stop Wasting Electricity With PowerUSB Beth Snyder February 21, 2012 You know what is amazing? How much you can save on your electric bill every month simply by turning off a few seemingly minor peripherals. We’re all familiar with power save mode, but how many of us actually turn off our monitors when we walk away from our desks? All that stuff plugged into the power strip behind your desk uses just a trickle of electricity, and those trickles can add up in a hurry. PowerUSB now has a product that will help you save money (and be kinder to the environment) without requiring any extra effort on your part. It looks like a regular power strip, but with the added bonus that anything plugged into one of its outlets will be turned off when your computer is turned off. Which means your monitor or printer or whatever you happen to have won’t be leeching electricity while you’re at work or (gasp) away from your desk doing something else. The power strip connects to your computer via USB, and of the four available outlets three of them can be programmed to shut down when your computer shuts down. The fourth outlet is for your computer, so it’s not programmable since you’ll have to shut your computer down manually anyway. The USB cable is six feet long, so you shouldn’t have a problem just putting this strip in place of your current one. Of course, if you have more than three peripherals (I’ve got five myself, and I don’t have nearly the gadgets some of you do), this won’t be so helpful, but at least it’s good for monitor, speakers, and printer. There is one feature that I find incredibly neat: you can program the strip to power up devices only upon certain events. For instance, it will only provide power to your printer when you actually need to print something. It also has a current sensing feature that will track how much power you’re saving at any given time, which also provides software overload protection in addition to the regular fuse. You can pick the basic model up for $69.99 US. Source: Slashgear Share This With The World!
