smartplate

Generally, a great number of people make a New Year’s resolution to go on a diet. Generally, most of those people will have given up on the idea some time around February. And generally, those people will start to panic about now because they’ve realized summer is once again just around the corner and the weight still hasn’t come off. Dieting is hard, it doesn’t matter who you are.

SmartPlate aims to ease some of the pain of dieting by doing some of the work for you. Each of its three sections contains tiny cameras and weight sensor plates that will analyze the food you’ve placed on the plate and let you know how many calories and the nutrition content in each item. It does this by connecting with an online database and then relaying that information to an app on your smartphone.

What’s nice about SmartPlate that sets it apart from some other similar gadgets is it’s automatic. You don’t have to carry around yet another gadget or point anything at your food to figure out if what you’re eating is healthy enough or not. You just put the food on the plate, and SmartPlate goes to work. It connects to the USDA nutrition database as well as its own database for packaged or fast foods, and gets the information to you within seconds. All you have to do is use the SmartPlate instead of your regular plates and you’re good to go.

SmartPlate is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, and I’ve got to tell you this thing is NOT cheap. You’ll have to pledge at least $99.00 US in order to get a SmartPlate, and you can choose between purple, fuschia, or teal (other colours may come later). They expect to ship in June of 2016, and projected retail price is $199.00 US.
