The idea of using your smartphone to power a desktop PC like experience is hardly new. Do you remember the Motorola Atrix 4G HD Dock from six years ago? How about what’s going on with Microsoft Continuum on Windows 10 mobile phones? Announced alongside the Galaxy S8 yesterday was the Samsung DeX Station and it aims to achieve fundamentally the same goal. But at what cost?

The Samsung DeX Station connects to your new Samsung Galaxy S8 via USB-C, effectively providing it with a series of ports. You’ve got two regular USB 2.0 ports for your keyboard and mouse, an Ethernet jack for wired connectivity, an HDMI port for an external monitor, and then a USB-C port for powering the darn thing. And if you’re worried about your phone bursting in flames, the Samsung DeX Station has a built-in fan too.

I don’t anticipate that the Samsung DeX Station will get much mainstream adoption, but stranger things have happened. It’s expected to retail for $150 with shipments to coincide with the “late April” launch window of the Galaxy S8. Find more detailed information on the Samsung website. And if you’re an @Work enterprise customer with T-Mobile, they’ll throw in a dock if you pre-order an S8 in store.
