Next-Gen Pebble 2 Smartwatch Coming Tuesday with Mic, New UI, Wider Screen Michael Kwan February 21, 2015 Despite all the efforts from all these different companies, smartwatches have not quite hit critical mass just yet and they’re not nearly as mainstream as smart TVs or smartphones. They’re making huge strides and one of the most successful to date has been the original Pebble smartwatch. Now that it’s a couple of years old, though, it’s certainly due for an update and not just the same watch in a nicer package like the Pebble Steel. Well, your prayers have been answered, because the so-called Pebble 2 is slated to be unveiled in just a few days. More specifically, if you head on over to the official Pebble website, you’ll notice the countdown timer depicted above and it looks like the next-generation Pebble 2 smartwatch (or whatever it ends up being called) will be announced on Tuesday. The folks at Pebble haven’t said anything official about the specs and features, but there have been some leaked reports that give us the inside scoop. Unlike Android Wear and the upcoming Apple Watch, the new Pebble won’t have a touchscreen. Instead, it’ll do the old button-based controls of its predecessor. The display will still be of the e-ink variety, helping with battery life, and the operating system has apparently be revamped by some people who worked on webOS to provide the upcoming smartwatch with a fresh new user interface. Aside from that, the display itself is said to be wider to allow for better navigation and to show more notifications, the body will be thinner, and the backlight will be better. More notably, we’re hearing that the Pebble 2 will also have a microphone for voice recognition capabilities, as well as “smart bands” for expanded functionality. The hope is that they’ll keep the same kind of affordable price point as the first Pebble and we only have to wait until Tuesday to find out for sure. Via 9to5Mac Share This With The World!
