It’s about to get a lot easier to grab your double-double and doughnut first thing in the morning. It’s being reported by the Canadian Press that Tim Hortons will add mobile ordering to its smartphone app this spring. Presumably, this will work much the same way that you’re already ordering your venti, extra hot, caramel macchiato via the Starbucks app.

Parent company Restaurant Brands International (RBI) also plans on expanding the mobile order functionality to Burger King locations across the country. You simply fire up the app, peruse the menu, add the items, and pay, all through your mobile device.

You had to figure it was only a matter of time before this happened. McDonald’s has already indicated that mobile ordering is coming later this year too. Maybe you can chalk this up to automation; just about all the McDonald’s locations here in Vancouver are down to a single (human) cashier, installing large, touchscreen ordering kiosks instead.

RBI has already been testing the ability to order via mobile app in 25 Tim Hortons locations in Ontario, as well as in 25 Burger King locations in Miami. While this might speed up the ordering process, you still have to wait for the people behind the counter to pour your coffee. And if the morning rush in your town is anything like mine, you’re probably still in for a bit of wait.
