Space travel. It’s something many of us have dreamed about since childhood, and something almost none of us will ever get to experience. Sure, there are several different commercial space vacation companies developing ways to send you into orbit, but I’m going to go ahead and assume most of you don’t have the disposable income required to do so any more than I do.

But what if you could send your furry best friend into orbit after his or her demise? It’s not remotely the same as going yourself, and it’s certainly not cheap, but it’s definitely a novel idea. Celestis has been in business since 1997 sending human remains into space, and now they’ve expanded their services to include man’s best friend as well. So even if you can’t experience the joys of outer space while you’re alive, now you and Fido can be sent together after you’ve shuffled off this mortal coil.

There are several levels of service, ranging from “Earth Rise”, which for $995.00 US will send your pet’s remains into orbit and back after experiencing zero gravity, to “Luna” or “Voyager”, which each cost $12,500.00 US and will launch them permanently to either the moon or outer space respectively. Middle ground is the “Earth Voyager” service, which allows the remains to ride along on a commercial or scientific satellite as it orbits the Earth before burning up on re-entry at a cost of $4,995.00 US.

As I said, Celestis Pets is certainly not cheap, and people like me will probably still opt for burying our beloved furry friends in the backyard under a tree. But if you’ve got the money and are one of those people (like me) who regard pets as family, this would be pretty neat.
