Worried About Your Teen Driver? Tiwi Can Help!

My 16-year-old niece is taking drivers’ education right now, and quite frankly that scares the living daylights out of me. I know, I know…I drove when I was her age, and it probably scared my parents as well. It’s how it happens. I don’t know if we’re hearing more about it in the digital and information age or if there really are way more serious accidents involving teen drivers, but it seems like a week doesn’t go by without hearing about something. I have no children of my own, but I would imagine something like this would give parents no end of peace of mind.

Tiwi works basically like the monitor some auto insurance companies place in your car to determine your eligibility for discounts, but with some enhancements. You mount Tiwi to your windshield or dashboard, and it monitors driving habits (acceleration, braking, speed limits, driving patterns), analyzes the data in real time, and then tells your teen driver how to change his or her driving habits to better conform with safe and legal ones. It even knows if they’ve buckled their seat belts, and tells them do so if they have not.

If that’s all it did, it wouldn’t be very good. I mean, teens are notorious for ignoring their parents, so they’re surely not going to pay attention to a little box on the windshield. Here’s where the good part (for parents, anyway) comes in: Tiwi also sends alerts and notifications to parents via text, email or phone call. Which means you can be minding your own business relaxing on the couch, and if your kid is driving too aggressively or blowing through stop signs, you’ll know about it immediately.

Parents get to decide which features they activate, and obviously the more you choose the more expensive your service package is going to be. It might seem a little too Big Brother for some people (and to be honest, I probably would have been one of them a few years ago), but for some parents it’s going to be a godsend. Tiwi starts $300.00 US and goes to around $600.00 US depending on data plan, and monthly service plans run around $25.00 US per month.
