I’ve covered my share of ridiculous, overpriced gadgets here at MEGATech News, but this one feels a bit different. The WaterO is a smart water purifier that texts you throughout the day to make sure that you’re staying hydrated. It will tell you how long it’s been since you had your last drink and how much more you need to drink to meet your recommended daily requirement. It also costs $399.

I imagine some people closed the window once they got to the price tag, and I don’t blame them. Here’s my question, though: is this really that crazy? Yes, $399 is steep, likely much more so than it needs to be. On the other hand, dehydration can lead to headaches, fatigue, dizziness, mood instability, anxiety, cramps, aches, and constipation, and that’s before you get really dehydrated, which can then lead to fever, low blood pressure, vomiting, and even delirium. And if you continue to not drink enough water, over time it can affect your circulation, digestion, metabolism, blood sugar – the list goes on.

The scary thing is that most modern studies show that Americans aren’t drinking enough water. The culprit is likely the constant barrage of beverages that aren’t water, and even healthy drinks like coffee and tea can act likes diuretics in high volumes, dehydrating you further.

What I’m getting at is that water is right at the top of the list of things that are important for our general well-being, and most of us aren’t drinking enough, so at least the WaterO is seeking to solve a very real problem. There are plenty of high-priced useless gadgets out there, and while WaterO is definitely high-priced, it’s not useless. And before you give it a dismissive hand wave and say that you don’t need to drop four hundred bucks just for something to tell you to drink more water, let me ask: are you drinking enough water?

Now we have to wait for someone to make one we can actually afford.
