He’s doesn’t have the celebrity of Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown, but Sir Robin Jacob, the UK judge who famously made Apple apologize to Samsung has joined Samsung’s legal team. He rose to notoriety when he ordered Apple to issue the public apology and pay Samsungs legal fees.

Florian Mueller over at FOSS Patents discovered that Sir Robin Jacob was recently hired by Samsung as an expert witness. It is unclear how UK law works, but it would be highly unlikely that Jacob wouldn’t have researched or know his legal rights in regards to moonlighting with Samsung less than four months after announcing his verdict. Mueller goes on to note:

Im sure that Samsung and Sir Robin Jacob wouldnt be doing this if there was any risk of this conduct violating the law. Apparently an ex-judge who is invited to rule on a case involving a given party is not barred by existing UK rules (though this case here may spark a debate whether some reform is needed) from being hired by the same party in another litigation outside the UK less than four months later.

So we have a judge who decrees a judgement against Apple, then less than six months later is rewarded by Samsung for his efforts. I’m pretty sure that type of thing isn’t allowed in the US. Just imagine if Judge Lucy Koh suddenly retained a position at Apple in light of her recent judgement.
