Well, colour me shocked and amazed! I got to the surgeon's office today, and they promptly cut off my cast and took x-rays. I assumed they would be putting another cast on, but it turns out not. Now I have this surgical shoe thing to wear, and I'm supposed to gradually start putting weight on it. By my calculation with what I was told originally, this is approximately 10 weeks earlier than it should be. Based on the hellfire pain involved in merely pressing my heel to the floor, however, I assume this next step of the healing process is going to take a fair portion of that time. But...no cast. I can not only (sort of) bend my ankle, but this means I can take a shower instead of a sponge bath. I'm really very excited!
