Sony’s E-Ink FES Watch May Not Be Smart, But It’s Pretty Dylan Duarte November 28, 2014 So the smartwatch race hasn’t let up one bit and if anything is more intense than ever. Everyone is churning out wearables, some more appealing than others, and while Sony’s FES watch isn’t a smartwatch in the way that we’d expect, it’s a pretty neat little device. I’ve always been impressed with the way e-ink looks. It’s partly because at heart I’m an old man who’s easily overwhelmed by technology, but e-ink displays also just look really good. Sony knows this, so they’re throwing one onto a watch. The FES Watch uses the technology for not just the face, but the entire band. The FES Watch actually turned up on a Japanese crowdfunding site some time ago, where the group behind the watch, Fashion Entertainments, raised 139% of their goal. Pre-orders will go out after next May. It didn’t come out until recently that FES is actually Sony and they were just trying to see if they can raise the funds without their brand. Sony is apparently looking into the possibility of using e-ink displays in the manufacturing of fashion products. Some may take issue with a large corporation using crowdfunding, but it’s important to remember that crowdfunding isn’t just about raising money. It’s also a way to gather public reaction to your product, in an attempt to gauge how viabile it is. In this case, Sony didn’t want their brand muddying the waters, but instead wanted to know how people felt about the deviceitself. Be sure to scroll down and check out pictures of the watch with various looks. via Tech Crunch Share This With The World!
