SnapRays Guidelight: So Simple, It's Brilliant

You know how every once in a while a product comes along and you just have to sit there with your mouth hanging open, wondering A: why no one has ever thought of it before, and B: why that someone couldn’t have been you? Yeah, that’s now, at least for me. Because this is so simple, it’s brilliant.

The SnapRays Guidelight is an outlet cover that doubles as a night light. I’m sure you have night lights in various locations around your house; most people do. Because while you may want to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, and you don’t want to trip over anything while you’re on your way, you certainly don’t want to turn on a bright light. Besides waking up anyone who can see it, it’ll hurt your eyes. Who wants that? So you install a night light. But now not only are you blocking an outlet you may need to use for something else, it sticks out and gets in the way. Also, they can get very expensive, especially if you choose the type that senses when it’s dark enough to turn on and off.

I can’t get over how awesome this thing is. All you do is turn off power to your outlet and pull the existing outlet cover off. Then install the Guidelight in its place, turn the power back on, and you’re done. When it gets dark, LED lights in the bottom of the Guidelight come on, and when it gets light, they go off. It draws power from the existing circuit without requiring any wiring via patented “Power Extractors” that “slide into the electrical box and around the outlet receptacle, making contact with the sides of the outlet.” Each one uses about 5 milliamps of power, and costs just pennies a year to operate.

These are currently a Kickstarter project, that apparently reached its funding goal within two hours. However, you have until April 3 to get in on it, for delivery in May (ships within the US only at most levels). Pledges start at $12 US for a single Guidelight and range up to $120 for a whole house pack of 10. They also offer a package for Mexico and Canada only, where $75 US gets you a package of five. Whatever you pledge, you get your choice of styles (duplex or decor) and colours (white, ivory, light almond). See the photo gallery below for examples of style and colour. I just pledged for a set of five.
