When I first laid eyes on the rotary cell phone, I thought “well here’s a thing for nobody.” I thought it was another weird Kickstarter novelty with no real market to sell to, but it’s actually the product of a YouTuber named Mr. Volt who seemingly made it just because, which is something I’m very on board with.

The rotary cell phone can store just a single phone number, it can text very slowly, it can tune into the radio, and it can even go to sleep. It’s made of aluminum, brass, and 3D-printed plastic, and is powered by a Adafruit microcomputer.

The rotary cell phone isn’t like other retro throwbacks, like those corded handsets that you can plug into your phone. This is its own thing, combining modern technology with decades-old ideas. It’s not novelty, it’s art, and I honestly can’t wait to see what Mr. Volt does next.
