One of the best ways to improve the performance of a PC is to switch from a mechanical hard drive to a solid state drive. While you could argue their price per GB still puts them north of uncomfortable, no one can argue against their speed or connection options. OCZ has added a new variation to their RevoDrive series that combines the speed of an SSD with the capacity of a HDD with their RevoDrive Hybrid Storage Solution.

OCZ has taken a RevoDrive PCIe with a maximum bandwidth of 910 MB/s, added a 1 TB HDD and their new Dataplex caching software. This combination gives you 1 TB of storage with the Dataplex using the 100 GB SSD as a massive cache for your most frequently used  data. It is Intel Smart Response with more cache space, more speed, and works with any system with a free PCIe slot.

For the icing on the cake, the MSRP is $499.99 putting it in line with 200 to 256 GB SSDs. This is a great price point for what the RevoDrive Hybrid offers. I have my concerns about the early images showing a 2.5″ HDD which could mean a 5400 RPM drive. If the included 1 TB HDD is 5400 RPMs, loading software not cached would be excruciating slow in comparison. I would like to see specs on each individual part from OCZ.

While this is exactly the type of hybrid HDD system I want to own, I would like to see software to micro-manage the 100 GB SSD cache. Also, when you install Windows 7 on the RevoDrive Hybrid the first time, which drive does it install to?
