temporary-tattoo

I don’t have any tattoos, but I’m certainly open to getting one if I find an idea that I like. I’m also a practical guy, the kind who appreciates gifts I can use versus ones that have sentimental value. What do those two things have in common? A digital tattoo that can unlock your smartphone, of course!

A company called VivaLnk has helped Motorola create a temporary, digital tattoo that can be used to unlock your smartphone. Instead of using a PIN or a password, just hold your phone up to your new ink and your phone will unlock! It’s an ultra thin NFC circuit wrapped in medical grade 3M adhesive that supposedly won’t irritate your skin.

You could say this is an extension of what we’re going to see in Android L where you can bypass the lock screen if your phone is connected to your smartwatch or Google Glass. You know, except you tap on your phone on your skin.

The digital tattoo idea has its appeal, but it’s a novelty at best. If you’re so paranoid that current phone locking methods bring you little comfort, then maybe this will work for you, but I can’t imagine this catching on with the average consumer. Though part of me hopes it does catch on. The sooner we get to branding citizens, the sooner we get to an oppressive, dystopian society, and then I’ll be able to start my underground resistance.
