Microsoft Being Sued Over Windows 8 Live Tiles Dylan Duarte October 31, 2012 That didn’t take long. When Microsoft launched Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the one feature they pushed harder than all the rest were the Live Tiles, a feature that’s also available on Windows 8. Unfortunately, Microsoft is now being sued for stealing the idea for their favorite new addition. A company called Surfcast, who designs operating system technology, filed a lawsuit against Microsoft on Tuesday, claiming that Live Tiles violates a patent that they hold. The patent is for a concept called Tiles, which certainly looks bad on Microsoft’s part. Then again, Tiles is a very fitting name for the feature and it’s not farfetched to think that both companies came to the name on their own. Where it gets a little more incriminating is the description of Tiles: “dynamically updating icons” that are “selectable and live—containing refreshed content that provides a real-time or near-real-time view of the underlying information.” Yeesh.
