It has never been a better time to be a fan of high quality streaming video over the Internet, whether you’re watching on your PC or from the comfort of your living room through a gaming console, set top box or smart TV. Netflix is great and Crackle can be interesting, but what about Hulu? Well, the big bosses over there have made a pretty big decision: they’re killing Hulu Plus for good.

In an email sent out to its subscribers, Hulu says that they’ve “had a blast with our old friend Plus but its time to move on. We just wanted to let you know that we are retiring the Hulu Plus name. From now on, we will just be known as Hulu.”

Yes, it’s just the name that’s being killed off and not the premium subscription service altogether. This helps a lot from the branding perspective, because they no longer have to really differentiate between Hulu and Hulu Plus in their marketing materials. From what I can gather, the ad-supported regular old Hulu that you used to get for free will still be there; it’ll just have to share its name with its paid premium cousin.

The transitional death of Hulu Plus looks like it’s still taking some time though, as they’re not wiping out the “Plus” in one fell swoop. Poke your way around the Internet and you’ll find “Hulu Plus” branding on the Hulu website, as well as through its listings in the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
