Fido Quietly Adds ZTE Grand X Plus to Lineup Michael Kwan December 6, 2014 A couple of months ago, I reviewed the ZTE Grand X, a budget-oriented Android smartphone that a Bell Mobility exclusive here in Canada at the time. It seems that the exclusivity deal is coming to an end, because I just spotted the ZTE Grand X Plus in a hidden nook on the Fido website. “But wait! There’s a “Plus” in the name. That must mean it’s a different phone!” I hear ya. Having a quick glance at the spec sheet, we find most of the major stuff has remained largely unchanged, but the ZTE Grand X Plus for Fido does have the leg up (terrible pun intended) on the Bell exclusive non-Plus version in a couple of categories. While the 5-inch display is still 1280×720 pixels, you’ll notice that the soft keys underneath the display are gone, replaced by the on-screen buttons instead. Also, the ZTE Grand X Plus ships with Android 4.4 KitKat, compared to the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean that came with the ZTE Grand X. Two other notable differences include support for LTE (with speeds up to 100Mbps) and the rear camera has been upgraded from a 5MP shooter to an 8MP camera instead. As of this writing, the ZTE Grand X Plus does not appear on the list of Android smartphones on the Fido website. Where you will find it is when you log into your Fido account and try to cash in your Fido Dollars. There, you’ll find the ZTE Grand X Plus listed at $0.00 with a 2-year Tab24 agreement on a Smart plan. Given this, I imagine it’s only a matter of time before the Grand X Plus appears on the front line with Fido, just as what happened with the HTC One M8 a few weeks ago. For my money, though, I’d still say the Nexus 5 is the better deal if you want a $0 phone on a 2-year Smart plan with Fido. UPDATE (DECEMBER 11, 2014): ZTE has now issued an official press release to announce the launch of the Grand X Plus with Fido. It was designed in Canada! Share This With The World!
