If everyone could cook, there wouldn’t be nearly as many successful restaurants as there are. The thing is, some people have it and some people don’t. Talent for cooking, I mean. I actually know people for whom making boxed macaroni and cheese is a challenge. Luckily, most of those people can afford to buy prepared food or go out to eat a lot, but what if you can’t? We’re not all independently wealthy, after all, and cooking at home from scratch is not only healthier but a lot more cost efficient. Providing you don’t burn your dinner beyond recognition.

Meet Pantelligent. Looks like a frying pan, doesn’t it? But it is oh-so-much more! Pantelligent pairs with your iOS device via Bluetooth LE to provide you with almost more information than you need to cook a meal. It has recipes, step-by-step instructions, heat and ingredient information, and it even lets you know when it’s time to flip your food. The app acts kind of as a virtual Home Ec teacher, and you have to check off the boxes of each step as it appears on your phone so it knows you can go on.

But what if you’re an experienced cook like me, and don’t need to be told how to make eggs over easy? Pantelligent also has a freestyle mode, where you can set your desired pan temperature and the app will let you know if it deviates so you can adjust your heat. If you throw together a recipe you consider a keeper, the app will record it for you so you can make it again.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is an excellent idea. Pantelligent is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, and with almost six weeks left they’ve already exceeded their funding goal by several thousand dollars. If you want to get in on this, a pledge of at least $199.00 US will get you one Pantelligent pan (retail will be $249.00 US). The only problem I see is it doesn’t work with Android, just iOS. They do plan to expand to the Android platform in the future, though.
