Edible Email Notifier Rewards You For Reading Your Mail Beth Snyder March 21, 2014 It happens all the time: Your inbox is full. So very full. So much email. You can usually get rid of a bunch of it simply by scanning the “from” section and deleting spam, but then there’s the rest of it. Some of it you need, some of it you wish you didn’t need, and some of it you actively dread. Wouldn’t it be neat if there was a way to reward yourself for slogging through the list? There is. Kathryn McElroy created the Edible Email Notifier (EEN) for the Maker Faire 2013, and I love it. She used an Arduino processor, a stepper motor, and a wine bottle to do it, which tells me she’s my kind of gal. What it does is run a script every 20 seconds to see how many items are marked unread in your inbox. If the number goes down, presumably you have read an email and deserve a reward, so an M&M drops into the glass. I’m sure there are ways you could probably trick it (deleting a bunch of email unread would do it), but this requires a little honesty on your part. Of course, now the possibilities are endless, aren’t they? It’s possible you’ll be hoping people send you an email just so you can get more candy! You might become the king or queen of email sent with a read receipt. That might not be so good, actually… I hate those and refuse to send them. But at least you’ll finally be reading those memos from your boss you’ve been avoiding, and that could well give you a leg up on your co-workers. You never know. This isn’t something that’s commercially available, of course. But since it was part of Maker Faire, it’s possible something like it could well become reality.
