While the exact game mechanics didn’t change the game, almost everything else about Mortal Kombat did. Rather than simply draw up the characters, they digitally captured actual actors. Rather than imply violence, Mortal Kombat went completely over the top with its gore and fatalities. In fact, the whole ESRB rating system for video games is largely credited to the backlash that Mortal Kombat got for the level of violence and gore it depicted. This paved the way for so many more “mature” games that all the kids clamored over, even if the Super Nintendo version got all kinds of nerfed with its grey “blood” and tamed finishers.
