Mortal Kombat

If Street Fighter II defined the fighting game genre, then Mortal Kombat rips its head out of its body and spewed blood all over your face.

While the exact game mechanics didn’t change the game, almost everything else about Mortal Kombat did. Rather than simply draw up the characters, they digitally captured actual actors. Rather than imply violence, Mortal Kombat went completely over the top with its gore and fatalities.

In fact, the whole ESRB rating system for video games is largely credited to the backlash that Mortal Kombat got for the level of violence and gore it depicted.
