Official: Amazon Just Bought Twitch for $970 Million Dylan Duarte August 25, 2014 Remember when Google was poised to buy Twitch? Now replace Google with Amazon and you’re on the right track! According to Twitch CEO Emmet Shear, Amazon has purchased Twitch.tv for a whopping $970 million. If I were the guys at Twitch, I would’ve pushed for that extra $30 million just because a billion sounds cooler. Elaborating on the deal, in a letter to the Twitch community, Shear stated that they’ll be “keeping most everything the same” at Twitch and that they’ll remain independent from Amazon. The deal is expected to close sometime in the second half of this year. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos commented on the deal saying that both companies “obsess over customers” and “like to think differently.” Corporate speak, yadda yadda. The Google deal apparently fell through due to a couple factors. One, Google was concerned that the deal could lead to anti-trust problems and two, Google and Twitch couldn’t decide on a breakup fee if the deal went south. Time will tell what this could do to Twitch. Shear says that they’ll still operate independently, but I wouldn’t be surprised if ads and affiliate links started popping up all over the place. via Ars Technica Share This With The World!
