littleBits Turns Dumb Appliances Smart Beth Snyder November 25, 2014 One thing I would absolutely love to have is a smart home… or at least smart appliances. However, not being independently wealthy, that’s just not something that I ever thought would be on my horizon. As it turns out, littleBits knows there is a huge market out there full of people like me, and they’ve come up with an affordable way to convert existing home appliances to smart ones without the ridiculous expense of replacing everything in our homes. The littleBits Smart Home Kit contains 14 modules and 11 accessories which snap together with magnets. You can then place them on your appliances and other devices, and they’re almost magically turned into Internet-connected devices a’la smart homes. Included in the modules are a temperature sensor, light sensor, sound trigger, and MP3 player, which allow you to customize what you need from the kit. Obviously the effectiveness of the Smart Home Kit will be limited by what appliances you currently own (as well as your technical ability), but it’s certainly a step in the right direction. The Kit comes with instructions for 14 different projects, and there is also an online community where folks upload and share their design ideas to give you even more flexibility. The Smart Home Kit costs just $249.00 US, and is available for preorder now (shipping slated for December). Source: DigitalTrends Share This With The World!
