The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and in this case the good intention is HUDWAY – a heads-up display that mounts on your dashboad and shows you whatever your phone is displaying, so you keep your eyes relatively on the road instead of constantly looking down at your device.

It’s not the first of its kind and it’s not a particularly safe idea, though maybe I’m wrong. HUDWAY is designed to be a cheap alternative to a GPS, which is great. However, the way I see it, it also encourages you to take your eyes off the road by allowing you to text, tweet, and watch videos while you’re driving. They encourage you to park before you do the latter, but there’s nothing stopping you from firing up a YouTube video while you’re barreling down the freeway. This is something that should be stopped altogether, not simply made safer.

Then again, maybe the philosophy behind HUDWAY is that drivers are going to do it anyway and at least this way their heads won’t be buried in their laps. We all know something who insists on fiddling with their phone while they’re driving, so perhaps they’re the target here. The risk can’t be stopped, but maybe it can be minimized.

You can check out HUDWAY on Kickstarter, where they’ve blown past their goal with a week left to go. If you pick it up, do so to make yourself a safer driver, not to watch SNL clips while on the road.
