Ask almost anyone for a recommendation on a compact action camera and by far the most likely response you’re going to get is to get a GoPro. The company has done a fantastic job of solidifying its spot in the market, even among professionals making “real” TV shows and movies. The problem is that they’ve always felt just a little too spendy for the budget-conscious average Joe. And that’s where the new GoPro HERO+ could fit a very useful niche.

Make no mistake, the HERO+ is still a GoPro through and through, coming in the same familiar form factor and using all of the accessories that work with all the cameras in the GoPro lineup. They just made this one a fair bit cheaper, starting at just $200.

You still get waterproof protection and while you don’t do 4K ultra-slow motion video, you can shoot at 1080p full HD and take advantage of options like time lapse and burst mode. It’ll take 8-megapixel stills too.

And even though the new HERO+ definitely slots at the bottom of the GoPro lineup of action cameras, it actually comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You have to remember that it wasn’t that long ago that integrated Wi-Fi was reserved only for GoPro’s higher end models.

The starting price for the new GoPro HERO+ will be $200, putting it roughly in the same camp as the PAPAGO! GoLife Extreme. Of course, you will be interested in getting some of those accessories to go with it, which is where the $300 GoPro HERO+ starter bundle is more attractive. That includes the LCD back, a head strap mount, and a 32GB Lexar microSDHC UHS-I/U3 memory card with USB 3.0 card reader.

Expect shipments to commence very soon.
