Atari hinted at the Ataribox at this year’s E3, but they didn’t give us much in the way of details. We still don’t know a lot, but they’ve now released enough details to tell us that the Ataribox is heavily inspired by the NES Classic, as if we didn’t know that already.

Like Nintendo’s mini console, the Ataribox offers vintage gaming in a modern package. According to Atari, their objective is to give us something new, while staying true to their heritage and appealing to old and new fans of Atari. So we get a sleek, wooden console with an SD card slot, an HDMI port, and four USB ports. There will also be a red and black edition of the box. Atari will deliver classic games along with “current content,” but what that current content is remains a mystery.

So that’s what we know now. Atari, to their credit, have said that they’re not teasing us just for the fun of it, but rather because they want to get all the details right and listen to community feedback as they go along.
