Every now and then, I like to spend an evening in candlelight. Whether I’m soaking in a bubble bath, listening to music, or just hanging out doing nothing, candlelight is soothing to me. But in an effort to be safe, all of my candles are enclosed in deep glass holders, which makes lighting them something of a pain… sometimes literally, as I often burn my fingers. I’ve tried using fireplace matches or a BBQ lighter, and while they help avoid burning myself, they’re pretty awkward to use.

Ignite Lighters Ltd. has a project currently seeking funding on Kickstarter that could solve this problem quite nicely. The Illume ArcLighter works like a taser, except instead of stunning an attacker, it uses electric current to set things on fire. And I do mean “things.” ArcLighter not only lights candles, but it can also be used to start your gas burner or even get kindling lit for your bonfire. The beauty of it using an electric arc is not just that it prevents you burning your fingers, but it’s also virtually impervious to wind.

ArcLighter is powered by a built-in battery, and comes with a USB dock for recharging. The tip remains cool to the touch unlike a regular flame lighter, and it even has an automatic shutoff after eight seconds for further safety. Since it uses an electric current you don’t have to deal with any fluid or flints, just grab it and go.

As I mentioned, this is currently a Kickstarter project, but the good news is they’ve already received more than double the amount of money in pledges that they asked for with about three weeks left in the campaign. Odds are really good ArcLighter will become a reality. They’re predicting delivery in November 2015. All you need to do is pledge at least $40.00 CAD (about $32.00 US), and you’ll receive one Illume ArcLighter, one USB docking station, and one USB cable.
