Not one but two new iPhone models – the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus – are available in North America as of Friday, September 19th. As usual, diehard Apple fans snatched up the newest offerings on the day of release, but others weren’t so quick to reach for their wallets. For those waiting patiently to see how the new phones are received, let’s take a look at the various reviews floating around the web.

Since many if not all of the reviews I’ve come across seem to review both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in one go due to their similarities, I’m going to treat it the same way. Unless stated otherwise, the following excerpts and content can be attributed to both new Apple devices.

Engadget

On the iPhone 6: “With fast performance, a great display, an elegant new design and a much-needed software update, it’s one of the best smartphones you can buy right now.”

On the iPhone 6 Plus: “…you get more of an iPad-like user experience on a much smaller device. It also has better battery life than the smaller iPhone 6, as well as a better camera. ”

Tech Radar

“…the iPhone 6 is a brilliant phone. It’s the first time I’d even consider using an iPhone as my daily device, thanks to the larger screen, better keyboard and most importantly upgraded battery life…while the iPhone 6 might not be the most powerful, most attractive, best at photography or best for battery life, Apple has put it all together in a way that, if you can forgive the price (and that’s a big if), offers a phone that should be at the sharp end of your consideration for your next smartphone.”

CNET

“…on the whole, the 6 is a product that feels like a collection of overdue Android features, given an excellent polish by Apple hardware and software design. It’s a really, really good phone. It’s not revolutionary.”

The Verge

“The latest iPhones could have been a chance for Apple to really re-examine what smartphone hardware should be, but Apple just built a bigger iPhone…the iPhone 6 is one of the best smartphones on the market. Maybe even the best. But it’s still an iPhone. The same thing Apple’s been making for seven years. A fantastically good iPhone, but an iPhone through and through.”

Forbes

“Yes the iPhone 6 is the best iPhone ever made (the iPhone 6 Plus is a phablet) but so it should be. Technology doesn’t go backwards. But while the iPhone 6 redefines the iPhone it doesn’t redefine the smartphone sector…And this is perhaps the most remarkable achievement of the iPhone 6: it can take on the very best smartphones on the market despite being blown away by many of them on paper. That’s not damning with faint praise, that’s as big as praise gets as it shows up how significantly its rivals are underperforming with what they have.”

PC Mag

“None of this will convert the hardcore Android user, because iOS is still iOS. I myself, don’t think I can give up my home screen widgets and drag-and-dropping video files. But if you’re a casual smartphone user who really doesn’t care which OS is running on your phone, but want a solid experience? Get a 64GB iPhone 6.”

Tech Crunch

“The iPhone 6 is the best smartphone available. It offers improvements in almost every way that matters, and it delivers those in a striking new design that balances consumer demand for larger screens with a thin, light and durable case…It feels like a return to form in all the right ways, in addition to packing a ton of new features like Apple Pay that light the path for what Apple as a company is to become. ”

The iPhone 6: The Best Incarnation of a Tired Design

So there you have it! Nothing really surprising in those reactions. Everyone agrees that the iPhone 6 is a stellar phone, though plently have leveled criticism at Apple for failing to innovate, while also pointing out that innovation doesn’t matter to those already in love with Apple’s devices. There were some complaints about the iPhone 6’s battery life which, while improved, will still leave consumers wanting. The iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand boasts excellent battery life, though all of the reviewers seem put off by the large display. That’s certainly a matter of preference, however. And then a few complained about the limitations of the phone’s NFC capabilities, but all in all the iPhone 6 is getting very excellent feedback all around.
