For better or for worse (mostly for worse), one of the most iconic features of the Apple iPhone X is that characteristics iPhone X notch at the top. But what you’re not interested in getting into the Apple universe? What if you want to lose a precious “notch” of screen real estate for no functional reason whatsoever? You’re in luck, because the XOutOf10 app for Android does exactly that.

It turns out that there’s a free app for Android that will blank out a portion of your screen. Unlike the iPhone X notch, that is arguably functional because it contains a bunch of sensors and other technology, the notch that you add to your Android device here is completely and utterly useless.

And that’s about it. There really isn’t much else to it. One thing worth mentioning is that you need to be running at least Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but even with all the fragmentation, it’s pretty safe to assume that everyone is at least past that point. If you are running at least Android 6.0, you will need to authorize permission to “permit drawing over apps” as the faux iPhone X notch will be “drawing” over every app that you run.

The XOutOf10 (get it?) app itself is a free download from the Google Play Store, but it is tagged as containing ads. I’m not entirely sure how the ads will run, but there it is. What if the fake notch turns into a perpetual ad banner? Could we be back to the days of AllAdvantage and Agloco all over again, except this time on mobile?

All kidding aside, developer Ido Ideas is also contemplating the possibility of making an app that simulates the little notch from the Essential Phone too. Would you want that? Why on Earth would you want that?
