A little less than a month ago, numerous users posted on NVIDIA’s GeForce forums reporting an audio issue after downloading and installing the 3.0 update on their SHIELD Tablet. It seems the speakers would crackle and pop before sound would either cut out entirely or decrease to a whisper.

In some cases, this would be accompanied by the speakers growing hot and emitting a burning smell, which would definitely indicate the speakers burning out. Most of the replies were to the effect of “same issue here” so it’s impossible to tell who experienced what outside of general speaker issues. Headphones would still produce sound, meaning this wasn’t an overall audio issue.

According to a representative who posted in the thread, the audio issue (as well as other 3.0 issues) will be fixed in the next OTA update, which is scheduled for release some time at the end of June. The weird thing is that prior to that update, the representative hadn’t acknowledged the issue, only saying that they couldn’t replicate it on their end.

Well apparently they did replicate it at some point if they were able to whip up a fix for it. If you’re one of the people infected, you’re out of luck until the end of the month. That’s assuming the bug didn’t actually fry your speakers, in which case you’ll have to send your tablet in for repairs.
