It seems like having a waterproof smartphone has become the name of the game these days. Even though the LG G3 doesn’t have any sort of official certification, a new video torture test has revealed that it can survive a dunk in the wet stuff just as well as its officially certified competitors.

As you may already know, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is IP67 rated and the Sony Xperia Z2 is IP68 rated. If you happen to drop one of these phones in a small pool of water, you can fetch them out and they’d be completely unharmed. The LG G3 lacks this kind of IP certification, but brave

The LG G3 lacks this kind of IP certification, but the very brave Harris Craycraft decided to see if the phone could survive similarly wet circumstances. His test started with holding the phone under some running water, but it quickly graduated to placing the LG G3 underwater for a couple of hours with the screen turned on the whole time. The handset emerged unscathed and fully functional.

To be fair, this isn’t quite the same as being submerged in a full meter of water–he only put it in his sink with about 4-5 inches of water–but it’s still pretty impressive. He did notice that some water got in behind the back cover, though, so he placed it along with the battery and phone in a bowl of rice to get rid of that extra moisture afterward. It was able to boot up fine the next day.

We can see why the LG G3 didn’t receive any sort of official IP certification. And while this is just one isolated torture test by one individual, it is reassuring to see that the G3 can survive this kind of ordeal.
