Purple Heart Day Beth Snyder August 7, 2011 So this is technically US-specific, but I know other countries have a similar medal called something else. In recognition of those who were injured in the service of their country, for whatever reason, why don’t we all take a moment to actually realize what that means. It takes a special kind of person to volunteer their time, limbs and lives for their country, and all too often we, as civilians, don’t really appreciate it. At best, it means walking away from their families for months if not years at a time. At worst, it means never coming home to them again, save in a box. Those who were injured are stuck somewhere in between. A Purple Heart is a small, powerful medal. I’ve held one in my hands, and it brought tears to my eyes.
