The original OnePlus One made a huge splash in the smartphone industry, going completely against the grain with a sales model that involved lower costs and selling directly to consumers. It was a hit and OnePlus hopes to build on that success with the OnePlus 2 coming this month. As it turns out, though, the OnePlus 2 won’t be the only OnePlus smartphone to be released this year and this is coming straight from OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei himself.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Pei dropped an unexpected bombshell on the world by saying that there is “going to be a second phone this year, before the end of the year. Hopefully for Christmas.” This is in addition to the OnePlus 2, but does this mean that this third phone will be a OnePlus 3? Maybe it’s a OnePlus 2 Plus? Or a OnePlus 2c? Or a OnePlus 2s? That’s not as clear.

Pei says that this third OnePlus smartphone “may or may not” have higher specs than the OnePlus 2. In this way, it could very well be an even more affordable addition to the OnePlus family, possibly competing in the same budget-oriented end of the market as the Moto G. If the OnePlus 2 is already being marketing as a 2016 flagship killer, I can’t imagine an even more powerful model could be released before 2016 even gets here. Pei does say that this third phone was “going to be my daily driver.”

Sadly, that’s all Pei has to say about the third OnePlus smartphone. He’s just proud to say that it’s “going to be amazing.” As the OnePlus 2 already has over a million pre-orders, I’d say the future of OnePlus is reasonably secure at least for the next little while.
