It seems that fingerprint scanners have suddenly become all the rage on just about every flagship smartphone coming out of just about every major smartphone manufacturer. Each successive generation of the Moto X from Motorola has done a great job of showing what an almost vanilla Android experience can be, more recently at a more affordable price. And what we’re seeing here could be our first glimpse at the Moto X 2016.

There’s not a heck of a lot that we can glean directly from this leaked photo of the Moto X 2016, but we can notice at least two prominent features. First, it looks like the micro-USB port has been replaced by the newer USB Type-C connector. The other key feature you’ll notice is the physical home button at the bottom of the screen and it appears that this will have an integrated fingerprint reader in it.

The placement and style of the fingerprint reader aligns with what we already see on the OnePlus 2 and on the Samsung Galaxy S7. Contrast this to the fingerprint scanner on the rear that we find on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. It’s really a matter of personal preference which is superior, as there are pros and cons to either approach.

Naturally, we should take every unofficial leak with a significant grain of salt. What we can expect is for the new Moto X 2016 to make its debut a little later this year. Based on previous generations of the Moto X, we should probably be looking at the late summer to early fall timeframe. The full leaked photo is below for your scrutinizing pleasure.
