There are PR disasters and then there are real disasters; this is both. In a move that should probably get someone fired, LG held a promotional event in Seoul, South Korea in which vouchers for free smartphones were attached to helium balloons, which were then released in an outdoor park for anyone to grab.

Unsurprisingly, this resulted in a free-for-all involving BB guns, spears, and knives on sticks, though I suppose those last two are more or less the same thing. Participants weren’t looking to murder each other necessarily; the BB guns and pointed weapons were made for popping balloons. However, we’re told not to run with scissors for a reason and that doubly goes for spears.

In the end, twenty people were injured and seven were hospitalized. LG is covering all the medical costs. The event was organized to promote the new LG G2 smartphone, which was released in New York last week without anybody getting stabbed.
