We live in the era of smart things. It started with phones, but it has extended to home appliances, gun locks, frying pans, and even socks. And while some of these “advancements” are of questionable necessity, Geko’s new – and the first ever – Smart Whistle makes a good case for its existence.

If the term “smart whistle” makes you scoff, know that you’re not alone. However, this whistle isn’t of the musical variety. It’s not for your amusement, but your personal safety, something that can’t be taken too seriously. Geko’s Smart Whistle pairs with your smart device via Bluetooth. On that device, in a specially-made app, you can put in all the contacts that you’d like to notify in an emergency. From there, blowing your whistle or holding the button for two seconds will send SOS notifications – text, emails, and if you’re on Android, phone calls – to all listed contacts, along with a map containing your current coordinates. The map will update every two to three minutes until the alert is deactivated.

While Geko’s dashcam didn’t exactly knock it out of the park, the Smart Whistle could very well revolutionize personal safety. I wouldn’t be surprised if more companies started producing these things, and the technology would just get better and better. The Smart Whistle is available now for $59.99.
